Risk Management Policy Template
A risk management policy template committing to control the hazards and risks of the organisation's operations through risk identification, assessment and control, with a risk register maintained and reviewed on an ongoing basis.
The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.
What the Risk Management Policy Covers
- Commitment and benefits - managing risks and opportunities at acceptable levels, and the benefits of doing so
- Identifying risks - context and interested parties on the risk register, risk assessments of work activities, the environmental aspects register, business risk assessments, incidents, complaints and audit findings, and new work or changes
- Responsibility - top management responsible overall, assessments compiled by a competent person with the workers involved, and authorised before work starts
- Site conditions - assessments reviewed for each site, including access, ground conditions, weather, services, neighbours and others on site
- Method statements - referring to the relevant assessments and setting out controls in the order the work is carried out
- Communication - to workers, sub-contractors, clients and principal contractors, with a record kept of each briefing
- Managing and reviewing risk - the hierarchy of control, and review at least once a year and after incidents or changes
- Approval - top level approval and annual review at management review
Written for the Common Assessment Standard
The sections on identifying risks, responsibility for assessments, site conditions, method statements, communication with briefing records, and review cover the points the Common Assessment Standard (CAS) question set asks a risk management policy to include.
Using the Policy
Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.
Who Needs a Risk Management Policy?
Organisations completing pre-qualification based on the Common Assessment Standard, such as Constructionline Gold, and organisations working to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001.
Included in the ISO 9001 Toolkit
This policy is part of the ISO 9001 Toolkit and is also included in the ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 toolkits and every alphaZ ISO toolkit that combines them.
Works with the Risk Registers
Risks can be recorded on the F-IMS36 Risk Register and F-IMS23 Opportunities Risks Register, environmental aspects on the F-IMS60 Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register, and risk assessments listed on the F-HS12 Risk Assessment Register. The F-HS23 Method Statement Template gives a starting point for method statements.
Document Control
The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
