IMS1 Section 6 Audit Checklist Template - Environmental Management
An audit checklist for Section 6 of the alphaZ IMS1 Integrated Management System Manual, covering environmental management for ISO 14001. Each question is referenced to its IMS1 section. It is set out on the F-Q2 Audit Checklist format, with the scope, criteria, auditor and date recorded at the top, and each question alongside the auditee and the evidence viewed, response and findings.
Areas Covered
- 6.1 Commitment to environmental protection - environmental awareness and the environmental staff handbook, the environmental legal requirements and updates, and the life cycle perspective on F-ENV6
- 6.2 Environmental assessment - environmental aspects, with controls for the significant ones
- 6.3 Environmental incident prevention and management - training and testing of the emergency response, significant incidents, premises checks, fire extinguishers and emergency signage
- 6.4 Waste management - bins and segregation, waste transfer notes, registered waste carriers, hazardous waste and the F-ENV2 Waste Matrix
- 6.5 Storage of oils and chemicals - storage to legal requirements, operative awareness and spill kits
Carrying Out the Audit
Section 6 is best audited on a walk round, looking at bins, storage areas, spill kits and emergency equipment, then checking the waste transfer notes, the waste matrix and the aspects register against what was seen.
Planning the Audit
Have IMS1 Section 6, the environmental aspects register, the legal register, F-ENV2, F-ENV6 and the waste transfer notes to hand.
Who Should Carry Out the Audit?
Anyone trained in internal auditing who is independent of the area being audited. The questions are written in plain language, so the checklist also works well for training new internal auditors.
Included in the ISO 14001 Toolkit
This checklist is part of the ISO 14001 Toolkit and the integrated toolkits that include ISO 14001.

Part of the IMS1 Audit Checklists
The IMS1 audit checklists follow the sections of the alphaZ IMS1 manual. Sections 6, 7 and 8 cover environmental, health and safety and information security management, and the IMS1 ISO 9001 Checklist covers Sections 1 to 5, so the whole system can be audited across the year using the ER11 Audit Schedule. The results can be written up using the F-Q31 Audit Report.
Not Using IMS1?
For a management system that is not built on IMS1, the Environmental Management System Audit Checklist covers the same ground without the IMS1 references.
Using the Findings
Gaps in waste records, storage or emergency response are raised as actions, with anything that could cause pollution dealt with straight away.
