Environmental Management System Audit Checklist Template

A management system audit checklist for environmental management to ISO 14001, covering commitment to environmental protection, environmental assessment, incident prevention and management, waste management, and the storage of oils and chemicals. It is set out on the F-Q2 Audit Checklist format, with the scope, criteria, auditor and date recorded at the top, and each question alongside the auditee and the evidence viewed, response and findings.

Areas Covered

  • Commitment to environmental protection - environmental awareness and guidance for operatives, the environmental legal requirements and how updates are received, and the life cycle perspective
  • Environmental assessment - identifying and assessing environmental aspects, with controls for the significant ones
  • Incident prevention and management - training and testing of the emergency response, recording and review of significant incidents, premises checks, fire extinguishers and emergency signage
  • Waste management - labelled bins and segregation, waste transfer notes, registered waste carriers, hazardous waste and the waste matrix
  • Storage of oils and chemicals - storage to legal requirements, operative awareness, and spill kits and their checks

Carrying Out the Audit

Much of this audit is done on a walk round, looking at bins, storage areas, spill kits and emergency equipment, then following up with the records. The waste transfer notes and carrier registrations, and the aspects register, are the main documents to sample.

Planning the Audit

Have the environmental aspects register, the legal register, waste transfer notes, the waste matrix and any incident records to hand, and plan to see the waste and storage areas.

Who Should Carry Out the Audit?

Anyone trained in internal auditing who is independent of the area being audited. The questions are written in plain language, so the checklist also works well for training new internal auditors.

Included in the ISO Toolkits

This checklist is part of the ISO 14001 Toolkit and is also included in the ISO 45001 toolkits, including the integrated toolkits that combine them.

The same ground is covered in more detail by the process audit checklists for commitment to environmental protection, environmental assessment, incident prevention, storage of oils and chemicals and waste management, which suit shorter audits spread across the year.

Using the IMS1 Manual?

Where the management system is built on the alphaZ IMS1 manual, the IMS1 Section 6 Checklist covers the same ground, with each question referenced to its IMS1 section and the alphaZ forms and registers used with it.

Using the Findings

Gaps in waste records, storage or emergency response are raised as actions, with anything that could cause pollution dealt with straight away.
