Training and Competence Training Talk

A training talk on training and competence for managers, supervisors and staff - how competence is defined for each job, how training is planned and recorded, and what happens from induction through to someone leaving. The download gives you a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, plus the full guidance document to run the talk from.

Two Files in One Download

  • TT-1-03 Training and Competence - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
  • GG-1-03 Training and Competence - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards

Talk Description

  • Competence needed for each job, and the training matrix
  • Awareness, including quality culture and ethical behaviour
  • Job / task requirements and organisational knowledge
  • Candidate screening, new starts and induction
  • Job training, supervision and the staff annual review
  • Staff leaving and handing over knowledge

Running the Talk

Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.

Questions raised during the talk can be noted in the comments box on the record, so anything that needs following up is not lost.

Why Handing Over Knowledge Is Covered

When someone leaves, what they know about the job can leave with them unless it is passed on. The talk ends on handover so staff see it as part of competence rather than an afterthought.

Adapting the Talk

Both files are fully editable, so add where your training matrix is kept, how your induction runs and who staff should speak to about training they need. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.

Keeping the Training Record

File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.

Who Is It For?

Managers and supervisors who plan training, and all staff who need to know how their own competence is recorded. It fits induction, the run-up to annual reviews and any change to job roles.
