Machine Guarding Training Talk
A training talk on machine guarding for machine operators, maintenance staff and supervisors - how moving machinery causes injury, the types of guard and safeguarding device, and keeping guards in place. It is a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, and it refers to the guidance document to run the talk from.
The Talk and the Documents It Refers To
- TT-7-10 Machine Guarding - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
- GG-7-10 Machine Guarding - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards
Talk Description
- How moving machinery can cause injury
- The general principles for guards - strong, secure and hard to defeat
- Fixed, interlocked, adjustable and self-adjusting guards
- Safeguarding devices such as presence sensors and two-hand controls
- Secondary safeguarding, safeguarding by location, and awareness barriers
- Keeping guards in place and checking them regularly
Running the Talk
Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.
Why Guards Must Be Hard to Defeat
A guard that is easy to remove or get round offers little protection once it has been taken off. The talk covers the general principles for guards - strong, secure and hard to defeat - so operators understand why guards stay in place and why defeating one is never acceptable.
Adapting the Talk
The record and the guidance are both fully editable, so add the machines on your site, the guards and safeguarding devices fitted to them, and who to tell when a guard is damaged or missing. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.
Keeping the Training Record
File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.
Who Is It For?
Anyone who operates, cleans, sets up or maintains machinery, and the supervisors who oversee them. Use it at induction, before someone starts on a different machine and after a guarding defect or near miss.

Delivering Talks Regularly

A day of remote support can take the risk assessments you already have, move them into one consistent format with the same scoring throughout, and build your hazard register from them, so the hazards your talks cover are backed by a current assessment.
