General Safety Guidance Training Talk
A training talk on general safety for all staff - each person's duty of care, using equipment safely, safety signs, protective equipment, fire routes and reporting accidents and safety issues. It is a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, and it refers to the guidance document to run the talk from.
The Talk and the Documents It Refers To
- TT-7-16 General Safety Guidance - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
- GG-7-16 General Safety Guidance - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards
- P-3 Health and Safety Policy - the policy the talk refers to
Talk Description
- Your duty to take care of your own health and safety and that of others
- Using equipment only when trained and authorised, and never removing guards
- Following safety signs and notices, and keeping work areas clear and tidy
- Wearing the protective equipment issued, and keeping fire routes clear
- Reporting injuries, accidents, damage, spills and safety issues
- Reporting medical conditions that affect safety, no horseplay, and no-smoking rules
Running the Talk
Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.
Why Everyone Has a Duty of Care
The talk opens with each person's duty to look after their own health and safety and that of the people around them. Starting there makes the rules that follow, from guards to housekeeping, part of everyone's job rather than something left to managers.
Adapting the Talk
The record and the guidance are both fully editable, so add your own site rules, such as smoking areas, restricted areas and visitor arrangements, and the name of the person staff report safety issues to. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.
Keeping the Training Record
File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.
Who Is It For?
Every new starter, temporary worker and contractor, and existing staff as a refresher. It works well as the first talk at induction and after any change to site rules.
Included in the ISO 45001 Toolkit
This training talk is part of the ISO 45001 Toolkit, and is included in the integrated toolkits that include it.
Delivering Talks Regularly
Short, regular talks keep health and safety in front of people. Run this one alongside the other health and safety training talks to build awareness one topic at a time.
Related Training Talks

- TT-7-11 Know Your Safety Signs
Would you rather we prepared it for you?
A day of remote support can take the risk assessments you already have, move them into one consistent format with the same scoring throughout, and build your hazard register from them, so the hazards your talks cover are backed by a current assessment.
