Risk Assessment - Hydraulic Press Operation

This pre-completed risk assessment covers the operation of a hydraulic press for shaping, compressing or assembling materials - including loading and unloading workpieces, set-up and die change, jam clearing, inspection and maintenance. It considers press operators, setters, helpers, maintenance staff, supervisors and anyone else in the press area.

What Does This Risk Assessment Cover?

The assessment addresses the significant hazards of press work, including:

  • Crushing at the press plates - the pressing zone between the moving ram and fixed bed
  • Unexpected start-up - inadvertent operation during set-up, jam clearing, cleaning and maintenance
  • Hydraulic fluid injection - leaks, bursts and high-pressure ejection capable of injecting fluid through skin
  • Ejected material - misaligned, brittle or flawed workpieces shattering or being thrown from the press
  • Set-up and die change - close work in and around the pressing zone during tooling changes
  • Stored energy during maintenance - hydraulic, gravitational and electrical energy in the press and its controls
  • Everyday workshop risks - noise, oil and debris underfoot, manual handling of workpieces and tooling, and operator training, along with emergency stop arrangements

How the Risks Are Rated

Every hazard is scored twice. The inherent rating shows the risk before controls are considered, and the residual rating shows the risk that remains once the listed controls are in place - giving a clear picture of how much each set of controls is actually doing. Ratings are selected from pre-populated drop-down boxes, with document styles that colour-match each rating automatically, and recognised safety pictograms mark hazards, mandatory controls and prohibitions throughout.

Who Is This Risk Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace operating hydraulic presses, including:

  • Manufacturing and fabrication workshops
  • Press shops and metal-forming operations
  • Assembly and component production lines
  • Maintenance and engineering departments

Ready to Adapt to Your Press

The controls reflect established good practice for powered press work. Review each row against your own machine, guarding and procedures, adjust the ratings where your circumstances differ, and record your site-specific details in the completed-by and location fields.

Health and Safety Compliance

This document provides ready-to-use evidence of risk assessment and supports occupational health and safety management. The assessment is based on the F-HS20 General Risk Assessment template, is fully editable in Microsoft Word, and can be customised with your company details, site-specific information and review dates.
