Risk Assessment - Installation of Air Cooling and Refrigeration Equipment

This pre-completed risk assessment covers the installation of commercial and industrial air cooling and refrigeration equipment - compressors, condensers, evaporators, chillers, cold stores, split systems and associated pipework, ductwork and controls. It considers installation engineers, mates, apprentices, supervisors, building occupants and other trades working nearby.

What Does This Risk Assessment Cover?

The assessment addresses the significant hazards of installation work, including:

  • Manual handling - moving compressors, condenser and evaporator units, cold store panels and pipework into position
  • Work at height - rooftop condensers, chillers, split system outdoor units and high-level pipework runs
  • Hot work - oxy-fuel brazing, soldering of pipework joints and the use of blowtorches
  • Cuts and punctures - copper pipework, sheet-metal casings, insulation materials and hand tools
  • Electrical hazards - terminating power and control cables and first energisation of new plant
  • Refrigerant circuits - evacuation, pressure testing and charging during installation
  • Slips, trips and falls - tools, materials and trailing leads around the work area

How the Risks Are Rated

Every hazard is scored twice. The inherent rating shows the risk before controls are considered, and the residual rating shows the risk that remains once the listed controls are in place - giving a clear picture of how much each set of controls is actually doing. Ratings are selected from pre-populated drop-down boxes, with document styles that colour-match each rating automatically, and recognised safety pictograms mark hazards, mandatory controls and prohibitions throughout.

Who Is This Risk Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any business installing cooling and refrigeration plant, including:

  • Air conditioning and refrigeration installation contractors
  • Mechanical and electrical (M&E) contractors
  • Cold store and commercial kitchen fit-out specialists
  • Facilities and building services providers

Ready to Adapt to Your Projects

The controls reflect established good practice for installation work. Review each row against your own projects and equipment, adjust the ratings where your circumstances differ, and record your site-specific details in the completed-by and location fields.

Health and Safety Compliance

This document provides ready-to-use evidence of risk assessment and supports occupational health and safety management. The assessment is based on the F-HS20 General Risk Assessment template, is fully editable in Microsoft Word, and can be customised with your company details, site-specific information and review dates.
