Effective form templates

This example COSHH risk assessment has been prepared using the
F-HS5 COSHH Assessment form template - a purpose-built template designed to focus entirely on what matters: identifying the hazards of each substance, recording the controls and PPE that manage them, and confirming exposure is adequately controlled, without any unnecessary fields getting in the way.

The file is supplied in fully editable MS Word format and can be saved to Google Docs if required, with pre-defined styles throughout to match the risk ratings.
The following document labelling is included in the footer:

COSHH Assessment - Gas Fuel Cell (LPG / Cordless Nail Gun)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers single-use pressurised LPG fuel cells for cordless gas nail guns and concrete nailers - including typical UK products from Paslode, Spit, DeWalt, HiKOKI and Tacwise. The liquefied gas mixture (but-1-ene, isobutane, propene and propane) is extremely flammable, and escaping gas can cause cold burns and collect in low or enclosed areas.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification - liquefied petroleum gas mixture in a sealed metering canister, SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid - vapour irritation, headache and drowsiness at high concentrations with asphyxiation risk in poorly ventilated spaces; cold burns and frostbite from escaping liquefied gas, with specific first aid for each route
  • Flammability and pressure hazard - kept away from heat, sparks and flames; never punctured, crushed or incinerated; stored upright below 50°C; damaged or leaking cells taken out of use
  • Workplace exposure limits - no specific WEL for the mixture as supplied; good ventilation with attention to vapour collecting in low areas
  • CLP hazard classification - Flammable and Pressurised pictograms
  • PPE requirements - impact-rated safety glasses for nail gun use, work gloves (insulated when handling cold or leaking cells), hearing protection and S3 safety footwear
  • Emergency procedures - leaking cell response, fire precautions and disposal of cells through an approved hazardous waste route

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace using gas-powered nailers, including:

  • First and second fix carpentry crews
  • Timber frame erectors and roofing contractors
  • Fencing and landscaping contractors
  • General construction sites and plant/tool hire fleets

Working From the Safety Data Sheet

The assessment reflects the hazards and controls found in typical manufacturer safety data sheets for these fuel cells. Gas composition varies by manufacturer, so check the details against the SDS for the exact product in use and record your own storage locations, users and site-specific controls.

COSHH Compliance

This document provides ready-to-use evidence of COSHH compliance and supports occupational health and safety management. The assessment is based on the F-HS5 COSHH Assessment template, is fully editable in Microsoft Word, and can be customised with your company details, site-specific information and review dates.
