COSHH Assessment - Intumescent Acrylic Sealant (Fire-Rated Acrylic)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers one-part intumescent acrylic sealants used to maintain fire resistance around service penetrations, perimeter joints and fire-resisting partitions - including common UK products such as Everbuild FireMate, Sika FireSil A, Bostik FireSeal, Hilti CP 606, Promaseal AC and Nullifire FS702. Most formulations are not classified as hazardous under CLP, but sensible controls still apply.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification - one-part emulsion acrylic with intumescent filler, typical trade names, SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid - inhalation, ingestion, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route
  • Low-hazard profile - mild irritation from prolonged contact; sensitised persons may react to preservatives; spray, sanding or poor ventilation raises the inhalation risk
  • Workplace exposure limits - no specific WEL during normal cartridge use; good ventilation, with respiratory protection assessed for confined or poorly ventilated areas
  • CLP hazard classification - Irritant pictogram
  • PPE requirements - safety glasses or splash goggles (EN166) and single-use nitrile gloves
  • Emergency procedures - spillage collection, keeping product out of drains, and curing excess material before disposal

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace where fire-rated acrylic sealant is applied, including:

  • Passive fire protection installers and firestopping contractors
  • Joiners fitting fire doors, frames and partitions
  • Construction and fit-out contractors
  • Facilities management and building maintenance teams

Working From the Safety Data Sheet

The assessment reflects the hazards and controls found in typical manufacturer safety data sheets for these sealants. Check the details against the SDS for the exact product in use, and record your own storage locations, users and site-specific controls in the relevant fields.

COSHH Compliance

This document provides ready-to-use evidence of COSHH compliance and supports occupational health and safety management. The assessment is based on the F-HS5 COSHH Assessment template, is fully editable in Microsoft Word, and can be customised with your company details, site-specific information and review dates.
