Risk Assessment - General Premises

This pre-completed general risk assessment covers the health and safety risks arising from the occupation and day-to-day use of business premises - the baseline assessment most organisations need before anything task-specific. It considers employees, contractors, visitors, delivery drivers and members of the public accessing the premises.

What Does This Risk Assessment Cover?

The assessment addresses the significant hazards of occupying and running business premises, including:

  • Slips, trips and falls - wet or contaminated floors, trailing cables, obstructions, worn floor coverings and poor lighting
  • Premises condition - lighting, ventilation, temperature, defective fixtures and general housekeeping
  • Fire - prevention, detection, means of escape and evacuation arrangements
  • Security and violence - unauthorised access, theft, verbal abuse and threats from intruders or visitors
  • Work-related stress - workload, role clarity, relationships, change and psychological wellbeing
  • Noise - plant, ventilation, deliveries and nearby external sources
  • Racking and storage - collapse, falling objects and loading injuries, along with powered roller shutter doors

Each hazard carries an inherent and residual risk rating using a likelihood and harm matrix, numbered control measures in a clear hierarchy, and recognised safety pictograms for hazards, mandatory controls and prohibitions.

How the Risks Are Rated

Every hazard is scored twice. The inherent rating shows the risk before controls are considered, and the residual rating shows the risk that remains once the listed controls are in place - giving a clear picture of how much each set of controls is actually doing. Ratings are selected from pre-populated drop-down boxes, with document styles that colour-match each rating automatically.

Who Is This Risk Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any organisation occupying business premises, including:

  • Offices and professional services firms
  • Warehouses, workshops and light industrial units
  • Retail and customer-facing premises
  • Multi-tenanted buildings and serviced offices

Ready to Adapt to Your Premises

The controls reflect established good practice for typical business premises. Review each row against your own building and operations, adjust the ratings where your circumstances differ, and record your site-specific details in the completed-by and location fields.

Health and Safety Compliance

This document provides ready-to-use evidence of risk assessment and supports occupational health and safety management. The assessment is based on the F-HS20 General Risk Assessment template, is fully editable in Microsoft Word, and can be customised with your company details, site-specific information and review dates.
