Power Tools Risk Assessment
What Does This Power Tools Risk Assessment Cover?
- Contact with cutting disc or blade — contact with rotating disc, blade or bit causing severe lacerations or amputations
- Disc or blade disintegration — angle grinder disc or saw blade fracturing at speed, projecting high-velocity fragments causing penetrating injuries
- Kickback from power tools — uncontrolled kickback from angle grinders, circular saws and routers causing loss of control and severe lacerations
- Noise from power tools — prolonged exposure to high noise levels causing noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus
- Dust and fumes from power tool operations — harmful dusts (silica, wood, asbestos) and fumes causing serious respiratory disease including silicosis and occupational asthma
Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Moderate to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;
- Guards fitted and correctly adjusted; tool isolated before changing discs, blades or accessories
- Discs and blades inspected before fitting; cracked or damaged accessories discarded immediately
- Face shield for grinding; exclusion zones in the plane of rotation for bystanders
- Work piece firmly clamped; tools operated with both hands; operator positioned to the side of the cutting plane
- Noise risk assessments; low-noise tool selection; hearing protection in noise exclusion zones
- On-tool dust extraction, RPE (minimum FFP3 for silica) and wet suppression for all dust-generating operations
A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.
