Winch Operations Risk Assessment
What Does This Winch Operations Risk Assessment Cover?
- Rope or chain failure and snap-back — failure of winch rope or anchor point under load causing violent snap-back striking persons with potentially fatal force
- Entanglement in winch drum — person or clothing drawn into the rotating winch drum causing fatal entanglement
- Load falling during winch lift — load slipping from rigging or hook during a lift causing fatal impact
- Anchor point failure — anchor structure failing under winch load causing sudden release of tension and snap-back or load drop
Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating of Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;
- Winch rope, chain, hooks and anchor points inspected before every use with SWL never exceeded
- All persons positioned outside the snap-back zone with blanket dampers used on rope
- Winch drum guard in position during operation with no person permitted to touch rope while drum is turning
- Load rigged by a trained competent slinger with exclusion zone beneath all lifts
- Anchor points assessed by a competent person with spread anchors used where capacity is uncertain
- All rigging gear subject to periodic formal LOLER inspection
A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.
