Biodiversity Policy Template

A biodiversity policy template committing to a positive and responsible course of action on the parts of the organisation's operations that could affect the environment, and to mitigating any actual or potential loss of biodiversity.

The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.

What the Biodiversity Policy Covers

  • Positive action - a responsible course of action on operations that could affect the environment
  • Harmful processes - avoiding or minimising processes that could harm biodiversity
  • Natural resources - managing resources that support biodiversity sustainably
  • Resource use - using water, energy and raw materials more efficiently and reducing their use
  • Pollution - avoiding or minimising the release of pollutants
  • Environmental objectives - set through the environmental management system
  • Procedures and processes - developed through the environmental management system to support the commitment
  • Review - operations reviewed and adapted to reduce harm to nearby ecosystems
  • Supply chain - managers and workers liaising with suppliers and sub-contractors
  • Raw materials - as sustainable as possible
  • Workers - encouraged to recycle and minimise waste

Written to Be Shared

Like every alphaZ policy, this is written as a public policy statement that can be shared openly with workers, customers, suppliers and assessors. The internal detail of how it is carried out belongs in your procedures.

Using the Policy

Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.

Who Needs a Biodiversity Policy?

Organisations whose sites or activities could affect habitats and wildlife, and those asked for a biodiversity commitment by customers or in tenders.

Works with the Environmental Aspects Register

The PP-6-100 Environmental Management Policy Procedure sets out the environmental management system, aspects can be assessed on the F-ENV3 Environmental Aspect Assessment Form, impacts on biodiversity recorded on the F-IMS60 Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register, and the RA-BR25 Environmental and Sustainability risk assessment covers wider environmental risks.

Document Control

The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
