Environmental Aspect Assessment Template
An assessment form for evaluating a single environmental aspect - its description, potential impact and applicable legislation - and determining whether it is significant and needs controlling. One assessment per aspect gives you a consistent, defensible record of how significance was decided.
It follows the aspects and impacts approach set out in ISO 14001 clause 6.1.2, and feeds the environmental aspects register that holds the full list.
Built for ISO 14001:2026 Aspects and Impacts
The form works through the significance of a single aspect the way ISO 14001 expects:
- Description of the aspect, its potential impact and the applicable legislation
- Three significance checks - emergency potential, significant impact, and legislative relevance
- A clear significant / not significant determination
- Current controls recorded as controlled or influenced, with any additional measures needed
What's Included in this Environmental Aspect Assessment
The form is laid out to complete an assessment from identification to control in one place:
- Header - the aspect, who completed the assessment and the date
- Description - the aspect, its potential impact on the environment and the applicable legislation
- Significance checks - potential for an emergency situation, potential for a significant impact, and whether current legislation covers the impact
- Significance determination - a Yes to any check flags the aspect as significant and requiring control
- Current controls - whether the aspect is controlled or can only be influenced
- Additional control measures - anything further required, to be logged as an issue
Who Needs an Environmental Aspect Assessment?
Any organisation identifying and evaluating its environmental aspects for ISO 14001 - a core record for building or maintaining an environmental management system.
Included in the ISO 14001 Toolkit
This form is part of the ISO 14001 Toolkit - example assessments, registers, procedures and guidance for running an environmental management system in one download - and is included in every alphaZ ISO toolkit that covers environmental management.
Pairs with the Aspects Register
Completed assessments feed the F-ENV4 Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register or the central F-IMS60 register, which hold the full list of aspects and their significance.
