Ride-On Compactors Risk Assessment
What Does This Ride-On Compactors Risk Assessment Cover?
- Person run over by compactor — compactor running over a person on the ground causing fatal crush injuries due to limited cab visibility
- Compactor overturning on slope or embankment edge — overturning on steep gradients or near embankment edges causing fatal injury to an unrestrained operator
- Whole-body vibration — prolonged compactor operation transmitting vibration through the seat causing back pain and spinal injury
- Hot bituminous material contact — burns from contact with freshly laid hot asphalt during refuelling, maintenance or dismounting
- Damage to buried services — compactor passing over shallow buried services causing pipe fracture, cable damage, electrocution or gas escape
Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Moderate to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;
- Exclusion zones and banksman deployment when ground workers must work in proximity to the compactor
- ROPS-fitted machines with seatbelt use and maximum gradient limits communicated to operators
- WBV risk assessment with vibration-dampening seat maintenance and operator job rotation
- Drum wetting system operation and heat-resistant PPE when working on hot asphalt
- Buried services located and plotted before compaction with lightweight plant over shallow services
A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.
