Fire Risk Assessment

This fully completed fire risk assessment example has been prepared by a qualified health and safety professional. It covers assessment and management of fire risk in the workplace in accordance with the applicable regulations, covering all potential ignition sources, fuel loads, means of escape, detection, suppression and emergency procedures, and can be used as a starting point when developing your own fire risk assessment documentation.

What Does This Fire Risk Assessment Cover?

This risk assessment identifies the key fire hazards in the workplace including;
  • Fire ignition from electrical faults — electrical faults, overloaded circuits and faulty wiring causing fire resulting in burns, smoke inhalation and fatality
  • Arson and deliberate fire-setting — intentional ignition causing rapid fire spread and significant risk to life
  • Inadequate means of escape — fire exits blocked, locked or poorly signed preventing swift evacuation of all building occupants
  • Delayed detection and slow evacuation — absence or failure of fire detection equipment allowing fire to take hold before discovery
  • Inadequate fire suppression and firefighting equipment — absence or failure of firefighting equipment leading to small fires becoming large

Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Moderate to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;

  • Electrical installation testing and PAT testing with defective equipment removed from service
  • Site security, combustible waste management and building inspection before locking
  • Fire exits kept unobstructed with emergency lighting tested monthly and annually
  • Fire detection and alarm system maintained to BS 5839 with weekly alarm tests and annual fire drills
  • Fire extinguishers maintained to BS 5306 with nominated staff trained in their use
  • Fire risk assessment reviewed annually and following any significant change

A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.

A Professional, Easy-to-Use Risk Assessment Template

This document uses colour-coded header styles matched to risk ratings, making it quick to read and easy to communicate during toolbox talks and worker training. A built-in risk rating matrix supports consistent evaluation of likelihood and consequence, and hazard pictograms using internationally recognised ISO warning symbols are included alongside relevant hazard entries.
The result is a completed risk assessment that looks professional, reads clearly, and demonstrates a structured and effective approach to risk management.

Who Is This Risk Assessment Template Suitable For?

This fire risk assessment template is suitable for health and safety advisers, responsible persons, facilities managers and any employer with a duty to assess and manage fire risk under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO 2005). It can be implemented as a standalone document or as part of a broader occupational health and safety management system aligned with ISO 45001.

Note: This example risk assessment is supplied for use as guidance only and should be reviewed and completed by a competent person.
