COSHH Assessment - Spray Paint (Aerosol / Solvent-Based)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers solvent-based aerosol spray paints used for decorative, maintenance and marking work - pressurised cans containing paint solids, a solvent blend (typically xylene, butyl acetate, acetone and n-butanol) and LPG/DME propellant. The combination of extreme flammability, pressure and solvent vapour makes this one of the more hazardous everyday consumables on site.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification - pigments, resin binders, organic solvents and propellant, SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid - solvent inhalation causing headache, dizziness and drowsiness; harmful if swallowed with severe chemical pneumonitis if aspirated (do not induce vomiting); skin defatting and eye irritation
- Flammable aerosol hazard - keep away from heat, sparks and flames; no spraying near ignition sources; cans kept upright, below 50°C and never punctured or burned, even when empty
- Workplace exposure limits - product-specific WELs per the SDS, with vapour build-up in enclosed spaces addressed through outdoor use or effective ventilation
- CLP hazard classification - Flammable, Irritant, Pressurised and Long-term health hazard pictograms
- PPE requirements - half-face respirator with A2 organic vapour cartridge (A2-P2 for spraying), splash goggles, nitrile gloves (minimum 0.4 mm, changed frequently) and disposable coveralls for overspray
- Emergency procedures - spillage response with ignition sources removed, fire precautions for aerosols, and hazardous waste disposal
