Cement and Concrete Works Risk Assessment

This fully completed cement and concrete works risk assessment example has been prepared by a qualified health and safety professional. It covers all activities involving the use of cement, concrete and associated products, and can be used as a starting point when developing your own risk assessment documentation.

What Does This Cement and Concrete Works Risk Assessment Cover?

This risk assessment identifies the key hazards associated with cement and concrete works including;
  • Cement burns — prolonged skin contact with wet cement causing serious alkali burns, often not immediately apparent
  • Cement and silica dust inhalation — inhalation of cement dust and silica from cutting cured concrete causing occupational lung disease
  • Manual handling of cement and concrete products — lifting bags, blocks and kerbs causing musculoskeletal injury
  • Formwork collapse during concrete pour — failure of formwork due to overloading or inadequate bracing causing collapse and burial
  • Eye injury from cement splash — cement slurry splashed into eyes causing chemical burns

Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Moderate to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;

  • Waterproof gloves, knee pads and waterproof footwear worn with barrier cream applied to exposed skin
  • FFP2 dust mask for mixing and FFP3 for cutting or grinding with wet cutting for all concrete cutting
  • Health surveillance for silica exposure for regular concrete-cutting operatives
  • Formwork designed to BS 5975 by a competent engineer with progressive and even concrete pouring
  • Eye wash station available with 10-minute minimum irrigation and immediate medical attention sought

A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.

A Professional, Easy-to-Use Risk Assessment Template

This document uses colour-coded header styles matched to risk ratings, making it quick to read and easy to communicate during toolbox talks and worker training. A built-in risk rating matrix supports consistent evaluation of likelihood and consequence, and hazard pictograms using internationally recognised ISO warning symbols are included alongside relevant hazard entries.
The result is a completed risk assessment that looks professional, reads clearly, and demonstrates a structured and effective approach to risk management.

Who Is This Risk Assessment Template Suitable For?

This cement and concrete works risk assessment template is suitable for health and safety advisers, civil engineering contractors, groundworkers, bricklayers and any employer with a duty to assess risks associated with cement and concrete under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. It can be implemented as a standalone document or as part of a broader occupational health and safety management system aligned with ISO 45001.

Note: This example risk assessment is supplied for use as guidance only and should be reviewed and completed by a competent person.
