COSHH Assessment — Plasterboard (Calcium Sulphate / Gypsum — Cutting Dust)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers dust generated during cutting, sawing and sanding of plasterboard — a calcium sulphate (gypsum) and paper-faced board used extensively in interior construction and fit-out.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name, chemical name (calcium sulphate dihydrate / gypsum plasterboard dust), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — inhalation, ingestion, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route
- Nuisance and respiratory dust — plasterboard dust is a nuisance dust at low levels; high-volume cutting generates significant dust that can irritate the airways; use LEV or wet-cut methods
- Workplace exposure limits — inhalable dust TWA 10 mg/m³ and respirable dust TWA 4 mg/m³, from workplace exposure limits guidance
- CLP hazard classification — not classified under CLP; general dust controls apply
- PPE requirements — including FFP2 dust mask and eye protection during cutting operations
- Emergency procedures — dust suppression and disposal guidance
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where plasterboard is cut or installed, including:
- Drylining and partitioning contractors
- General builders and fit-out contractors
- Refurbishment and interior fit-out teams
- Housing developers and maintenance teams
