COSHH Assessment — Freezer Spray (HFC-134a / HFO-1234ze Refrigerant Aerosol)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers freezer spray based on HFC-134a or HFO-1234ze refrigerant — a pressurised aerosol used in electronics maintenance and repair to rapidly cool components during fault-finding and thermal testing.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name, chemical name (HFC-134a / HFO-1234ze pressurised aerosol), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — inhalation, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route
- Frostbite and cold burn hazard — spray cools surfaces to below –40°C; direct skin or eye contact causes immediate frostbite and cold burns
- Asphyxiation risk — high concentrations displace oxygen; deliberate inhalation or use in confined spaces can cause unconsciousness and cardiac arrest
- Workplace exposure limits — HFC-134a TWA 1000 ppm over 8 hours, from workplace exposure limits guidance
- CLP hazard classification — Irritant and Pressurised gas pictograms
- PPE requirements — including safety spectacles and insulated gloves to protect against cold burns
- Emergency procedures — gas leak ventilation; never expose container to heat above 50°C
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where freezer spray is used, including:
- Electronics repair workshops and PCB fault-finding technicians
- IT hardware and server maintenance teams
- Field service engineers carrying out on-site equipment diagnostics
- Manufacturing quality control and thermal stress testing
- Telecommunications equipment maintenance operations
COSHH Compliance
This document provides ready-to-use evidence of COSHH compliance and supports occupational health and safety management. The assessment is based on the F-HS5 COSHH Assessment template, is fully editable in Microsoft Word, and can be customised with your company details, site-specific information and review dates.
