COSHH Assessment — Chalk (Calcium Carbonate / Marking Chalk)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers calcium carbonate marking chalk — used in construction, engineering, sports and education for marking lines, measuring and layout work.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name, chemical name (calcium carbonate / CaCO3), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — inhalation, ingestion, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route
- Dust inhalation concern — chalk dust is a nuisance dust; repeated inhalation of high concentrations may cause mild respiratory irritation; good housekeeping minimises exposure
- Workplace exposure limits — inhalable and respirable dust TWA limits, from workplace exposure limits guidance
- CLP hazard classification — not classified as hazardous under CLP at normal use concentrations
- PPE requirements — dust mask for activities generating significant airborne chalk dust
- Emergency procedures — dust control and spillage response
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where marking chalk is used, including:
- Construction and groundworks contractors
- Engineering workshops and fabrication yards
- Sports facilities and grounds maintenance teams
- Schools and educational establishments
