COSHH Assessment — Liquefied Propane Gas (LPG / Propane C3H8)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers liquefied propane gas (LPG) — stored under pressure as a liquid and used as a fuel for heating, cooking, industrial processes and portable equipment across many sectors.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name, chemical name (propane C3H8 / LPG), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — inhalation, ingestion, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route
- Asphyxiation and BLEVE hazard — propane displaces oxygen in enclosed spaces; pressurised cylinders can cause a boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion (BLEVE) if exposed to fire
- Workplace exposure limits — propane TWA 1000 ppm and STEL 1250 ppm, from workplace exposure limits guidance
- CLP hazard classification — Flammable and Pressurised gas pictograms
- PPE requirements — including insulated gloves (cryogenic risk from liquid), eye protection and no ignition sources
- Emergency procedures — gas leak response and fire/cylinder emergency procedures
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where LPG is used or stored, including:
- Construction sites using LPG for heating and cutting
- Catering and hospitality operations using LPG cooking equipment
- Agricultural and horticultural businesses
- Industrial processing and manufacturing facilities
- Leisure and events operations using portable LPG equipment
COSHH Compliance
This document provides ready-to-use evidence of COSHH compliance and supports occupational health and safety management. The assessment is based on the F-HS5 COSHH Assessment template, is fully editable in Microsoft Word, and can be customised with your company details, site-specific information and review dates.
