ISO 42001:2023 Awareness Training Course
The ISO 42001:2023 Awareness Training Course is a PowerPoint presentation for introducing staff to the ISO 42001 artificial intelligence management system (AIMS) standard. It opens with what ISO 42001 is and why it was introduced, sets out the high level structure, then works through clauses 4 to 10 in plain terms, referenced to the clause number, with slides on the Annex A controls.
The course supports ISO 42001 clause 7.3 Awareness, which requires personnel to be aware of the AI policy, their contribution to the AI management system and the implications of not conforming. It also gives managers a clause by clause overview before implementation or an internal audit.
What the Presentation Covers
- What is ISO 42001 - the standard for the requirements of an AI management system, its history, and the organisations that develop, provide or use AI systems that can adopt it
- High Level Structure - the clause headings shared with the other management system standards, with clauses 1 to 3 containing no auditable requirements
- Clause 4 Context of the Organisation - internal and external issues, interested parties, and a scope that states which AI systems and activities are covered
- Clause 5 Leadership - leadership and commitment, what the AI policy must do, AI roles and responsibilities, and allocating responsibilities where an AI system is shared with another party
- Clause 6 Planning - actions to address risks and opportunities, the AI risk assessment, the AI system impact assessment and AI objectives
- Clause 7 Support - resources, awareness and the control of documented information
- Clause 8 Operation - operational planning and control, and the AI risk assessment carried out at planned intervals and when significant changes occur
- Annex A Controls - the controls under nine headings, from resources and impact assessment to the AI system life cycle, data, use of AI systems and third-party and customer relationships, chosen through the organisation's own risk assessment
- Clauses 9 and 10 - monitoring and measurement, internal audit, management review, continual improvement, and nonconformity and corrective action
Who Needs an ISO 42001 Awareness Course?
Any organisation implementing or maintaining an ISO 42001 AI management system needs its people to understand what the standard asks of them and how AI is to be used and overseen in the business. The course suits small and medium sized businesses and larger companies running their own awareness sessions for new starters, existing staff and managers without an outside trainer. It also works as a refresher before an internal or external audit.
Included in the ISO 42001 Toolkit
This presentation is part of the ISO 42001 Toolkit.
Delivering the Course
Run the presentation as a group session or a one to one briefing, adding examples from your own business against each clause. Record who attended on the F-Q7 Training Talk Attendance Record and issue the ISO 42001:2023 Training Certificate Template to each person who completes the session.
The AI System Impact Assessment
The slides on Clause 6 cover the AI system impact assessment, the requirement specific to ISO 42001 with no equivalent in ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001: considering the effect of each AI system on individuals, groups and society, not only the risk to the organisation. It is recorded on the F-AI3 AI Impact Assessment.
Pairs with Other Training
For a wider introduction, the Introduction to the Integrated Management System explains how the integrated management system works and Introduction to ISO Audits and Certification covers the audit and certification process. Staff who go on to carry out internal audits can follow up with the Internal Audit Training Presentation.
