Carbon Management Plan Template

A practical carbon management plan template in Microsoft Word format, designed to document an organisation's approach to measuring, reporting and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a single, defensible document.

A documented carbon management plan demonstrates credible carbon stewardship to customers, procurement teams and external auditors, and provides the structured framework needed to set, track and report carbon reduction targets over time.

Aligned with ISO 14001:2026

This plan is aligned with ISO 14001:2026, published on 15 April 2026, which strengthens the expectation that organisations consider climate change as part of environmental performance evaluation:

  • Supports the 2026 standard's emphasis on climate change as one of the environmental conditions organisations must consider under clause 4.1.
  • Provides the structured carbon reporting framework that procurement and supply chain teams increasingly expect, including documented methodology, scope coverage and reduction trajectory.
  • Positioned as an optional companion to the wider ISO 14001:2026 environmental management system. Organisations meeting ISO 14001:2026 without a formal carbon plan remain fully compliant; this plan supports those wanting to go further on carbon performance.

What's Included in this Carbon Management Plan

The plan is supplied as a structured Word document covering:

  • Scope and applicability - which parts of the business and which emission categories are covered, with documented exclusions for transparency.
  • Methodology - the three-scope GHG accounting approach using DEFRA conversion factors, with definitions of Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (purchased energy) and Scope 3 (value chain).
  • Glossary of carbon accounting terms used throughout the plan.
  • Carbon emissions data section - a two-page dashboard with the hero total tCO2e figure, breakdown by scope and category, baseline comparison and Net Zero trajectory.
  • Reduction targets and actions - narrative section for documenting target trajectory and the specific actions being taken to achieve it.

Who Needs a Carbon Management Plan?

This plan is suitable for any organisation operating an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System that wants to formalise its approach to carbon. Particularly suited to SMEs facing procurement carbon disclosure requests, supply chain net zero questionnaires, PPN 06/21 style requirements, or any tender or contract requiring documented carbon credentials. Larger organisations refreshing their existing carbon documentation to align with ISO 14001:2026 will also benefit from the structured template.

Included in Every ISO 14001 Toolkit

This plan is included in every alphaZ documents toolkit that covers ISO 14001, from the standalone ISO 14001 Toolkit through to the fully integrated multi-standard toolkits. If you need a wider set of documents for an environmental or integrated management system, the toolkit route gives you this file plus everything else needed for compliant management system documentation, in a single download.

Sample Data Version Available with Subscription

A full sample data version of this plan is included with an alphaZ subscription, populated with realistic SME data showing a current period total of 20.2 tCO2e, a 7.5% reduction on baseline, embedded scope and category charts, and a worked Net Zero trajectory. The sample shows what a completed plan looks like end to end as illustrated in the images which show the charts from the ER34 Environmental Performance Register embedded within the Word file - once embedded the data can be edited within Word or replaced with updated charts.

Pairs with the Environmental Performance Register

This plan is designed to pair with the companion ER34 Environmental Performance Register. The register holds the activity data and calculations; this plan presents the narrative, targets and reporting. Once a year, the four dashboard charts from the register's Report sheet can be copy-pasted into this plan as images or as embedded Excel objects, the hero figure and breakdown tables are updated, and the document is exported to PDF. Total annual workflow is approximately ten minutes once the data is logged.
