ISO 45001:2018 Awareness Training Course
The ISO 45001:2018 Awareness Training Course is a PowerPoint presentation for introducing workers to the ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) standard. It opens with what ISO 45001 is and how it came to replace OHSAS 18001, sets out the harmonised structure, then works through clauses 4 to 10 with the main requirements of each clause explained in plain terms and referenced to the clause number.
The course supports ISO 45001 clause 7.3 Awareness, which requires workers to be aware of the health and safety policy and objectives, their contribution to the OHSMS, relevant incidents, hazards and risks, and their ability to remove themselves from imminent and serious danger. It also gives managers a clause by clause overview before implementation or an internal audit.
What the Presentation Covers
- What is ISO 45001 - the standard for the requirements of an occupational health and safety management system, its development by ISO/PC 283 from 2013, publication in 2018 replacing OHSAS 18001:2007, and the 2024 climate change amendment
- Harmonized Structure - the clause headings and sub-clauses, including consultation and participation of workers, emergency preparedness and response, and incident, nonconformity and corrective action
- Clauses 1, 2 and 3 - scope, normative references and terms and definitions, which contain no auditable requirements, so conformity is demonstrated against clauses 4 to 10
- Clause 4 Context of the Organisation - external and internal issues including whether climate change is relevant, interested parties including workers, the scope of the OHSMS, and establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving the system (4.4)
- Clause 5 Leadership - top management accountability for preventing work-related injury and ill health, the commitments in the health and safety policy, roles and responsibilities, and consultation and participation of non-managerial workers (5.4)
- Clause 6 Planning - risks and opportunities, hazard identification, assessment of health and safety risks and opportunities, determining legal and other requirements (6.1.3), and objectives with plans to achieve them
- Clause 7 Support - resources, competence of workers, awareness including the ability to remove themselves from imminent and serious danger, internal and external communication, and control of documented information
- Clause 8 Operation - operational planning and control, eliminating hazards using the hierarchy of controls (8.1.2), management of change, procurement, contractors and outsourcing, and emergency preparedness and response (8.2)
- Clause 9 Performance Evaluation - monitoring and measurement, evaluation of compliance with legal and other requirements (9.1.2), internal audit with results reported to workers and their representatives, and management review
- Clause 10 Improvement - determining opportunities for improvement, reporting, investigating and acting on incidents and nonconformities (10.2), keeping records of the results, and continual improvement of the OHSMS (10.3)
Who Needs an ISO 45001 Awareness Course?
Any organisation implementing or maintaining an ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system needs its workers to understand what the standard asks of them. The course suits small and medium sized businesses running their own awareness sessions for new starters, existing workers, supervisors and managers without bringing in an outside trainer. It also works as a refresher before an internal or external audit, or as a briefing for a health and safety committee.
Included in the ISO 45001 Toolkit
This presentation is part of the ISO 45001 Toolkit and the integrated toolkits that include it.
Delivering the Course
Run the presentation as a group session or a one to one briefing, adding examples from your own business against each clause. Record who attended on the F-Q7 Training Talk Attendance Record and issue the ISO 45001:2018 Training Certificate Template to each person who completes the session.
Worker Consultation and Participation
ISO 45001 places particular emphasis on non-managerial workers, and the presentation shows what that means in practice. The slides list what workers are consulted on, such as the policy, legal requirements, objectives and the audit programme, and what they take part in, from hazard identification and risk assessment to training needs and incident investigation. They also cover protecting workers from reprisals when they report hazards.
Pairs with Other Training
For a wider introduction, the Introduction to the Integrated Management System explains how the integrated management system works and Introduction to ISO Audits and Certification covers the audit and certification process. Staff who go on to carry out internal audits can follow up with the Internal Audit Training Presentation.
