ISO 14001 Awareness Training Course
The ISO 14001 Awareness Training Course is a PowerPoint presentation for introducing staff to the ISO 14001:2026 environmental management system standard. It opens with what ISO 14001 is and how it has developed, sets out the Harmonized Structure, then works through clauses 4 to 10 with the main requirements of each clause explained in plain terms and referenced to the clause number.
The course supports ISO 14001 clause 7.3 Awareness, which requires personnel to be aware of the environmental policy, significant environmental aspects and their impacts, and their contribution to the EMS and the implications of not conforming. It also gives managers a clause by clause overview before implementation or an internal audit. The ISO 14001:2015 version is also included for organisations still working to that edition.
What the Presentation Covers
- What is ISO 14001 - the standard for the requirements of an environmental management system (EMS), its history from 1996 to the 2026 edition, and the trends across editions, including less emphasis on documentation and the 2024 climate change amendment
- Harmonized Structure - the clause headings of the Harmonized Structure (Annex SL) and the sub-clauses under each, from context of the organisation through to nonconformity and continual improvement
- Clauses 1, 2 and 3 - scope, normative references and terms and definitions, which are not requirements, so organisations certified to ISO 14001 demonstrate compliance with clauses 4 to 10
- Clause 4 Context of the Organisation - internal and external issues, including environmental conditions such as climate change, biodiversity and resource availability, interested parties and their requirements, the scope of the EMS and the EMS and its processes
- Clause 5 Leadership - top management accountability for the EMS and its integration into business processes, the environmental policy with its commitments to protect the environment and fulfil compliance obligations, and roles, responsibilities and authorities
- Clause 6 Planning - risks and opportunities, environmental aspects from a life cycle perspective, compliance obligations, planning action, SMART environmental objectives and clause 6.3 planning of changes
- Clause 7 Support - resources, competence, awareness of the environmental policy and significant environmental aspects, internal and external communication, and control of documented information
- Clause 8 Operation - operational planning and control, communicating environmental requirements to externally provided processes, products and services, and emergency preparedness and response, including periodic testing of planned response actions
- Clause 9 Performance Evaluation - monitoring and measurement, evaluating compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, an internal audit programme with objectives, criteria and scope defined for each audit, and management review
- Clause 10 Improvement - continual improvement through opportunities that bring value to the organisation, and reacting to a nonconformity with action to control and correct it and a review of its effectiveness
Who Needs an ISO 14001 Awareness Course?
Any organisation implementing or maintaining an ISO 14001 environmental management system needs its people to understand what the standard asks of them. The course suits small and medium sized businesses running their own awareness sessions for new starters, existing staff and managers without bringing in an outside trainer. It also works as a refresher before an internal or external audit, or as a starting point for the person leading the environmental management system.
Included in the ISO 14001 Toolkit
This presentation is part of the ISO 14001 Toolkit and the integrated toolkits that include it.
Delivering the Course
Run the presentation as a group session or a one to one briefing, adding examples from your own business against each clause. Record who attended on the F-Q7 Training Talk Attendance Record and issue the ISO 14001 Training Certificate Template to each person who completes the session.
Climate Change and Planning of Changes
The history slide points to the 2024 climate change amendment, and the clause 4.1 slide lists climate change, biodiversity, pollution levels and resource availability among the environmental conditions to consider. A separate slide covers clause 6.3 Planning of changes, introduced in ISO 14001:2026, with examples such as process changes, new equipment, organisational restructuring and changes to legal obligations or significant aspects.
Pairs with Other Training
For a wider introduction, the Introduction to the Integrated Management System explains how the integrated management system works and Introduction to ISO Audits and Certification covers the audit and certification process. Staff who go on to carry out internal audits can follow up with the Internal Audit Training Presentation.
