Noise Awareness Training Talk
A training talk on noise awareness for staff who work in noisy areas - how noise damages hearing, daily exposure, reducing noise at source, and choosing and wearing hearing protection. The download gives you a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, plus the full guidance document to run the talk from.
Two Files in One Download
- TT-7-15 Noise Awareness - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
- GG-7-15 Noise Awareness - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards
Talk Description
- How noise at work can damage hearing, including tinnitus
- How the ear works
- Daily noise exposure, and the action and limit values for noise
- Reducing noise first, with hearing protection as a last resort
- Selecting, wearing and looking after hearing protection, and hearing protection zones
- Training, reporting defects and health surveillance
Running the Talk
Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.
Why Hearing Protection Comes Last
Ear defenders and plugs only protect people when they are worn properly and all the time in noisy areas, so they are the last line of defence rather than the first. The talk explains that noise is reduced first, and that hearing protection covers what is left.
Adapting the Talk
Both files are fully editable, so add the noisy machines and tasks on your site, where the hearing protection zones are, the types of protection issued and who arranges health surveillance. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.
Keeping the Training Record
File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.
Who Is It For?
Anyone who works in or passes through noisy areas, and the supervisors responsible for them. It works at induction, as a refresher and when different machinery or processes change noise levels.

A day of remote support can take the risk assessments you already have, move them into one consistent format with the same scoring throughout, and build your hazard register from them, so the hazards your talks cover are backed by a current assessment.
