Lifting Operations Policy Template
A lifting operations policy template covering both aspects of lifting the law deals with, the equipment used and the lifting operation itself, and how the organisation complies with each.
The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.
What the Lifting Operations Policy Covers
- Two aspects - the lifting equipment used and the lifting operation itself
- Planning - every lifting operation risk assessed, planned by a competent person, supervised and carried out safely
- Resources - adequate resources allocated, with more planning the more complex the lift
- Routine and complex lifts - a general risk assessment and safe system of work for routine lifts, and an individual lifting plan for non-routine or complex ones
- Equipment - lifting equipment bought from approved suppliers with the correct approvals and certification
- Register - every item uniquely identified and logged with the date of its next inspection or examination
- Examination reports - the date, the next examination due, and any defects that are or could become a danger
- Examination intervals - 6-monthly for equipment used to lift people and for all accessories, and 12-monthly for other lifting equipment, unless an examination scheme says otherwise
- Other examinations - after installation or assembly at a new location, and after any event that could affect safety
- Faulty equipment - taken out of use and segregated until repaired or disposed of
- Training - no use of lifting equipment or part in lifting operations without training
Written to Be Shared
Like every alphaZ policy, this is written as a public policy statement that can be shared openly with workers, customers, suppliers and assessors. The internal detail of how it is carried out belongs in your procedures.
Using the Policy
Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.
Who Needs a Lifting Operations Policy?
Organisations that own, hire or use lifting equipment or carry out lifting operations.
Works with the Lifting Operations Procedure
The PP-7-14 Lifting Operations Policy Procedure sets out the procedure, the RA-HS31 Lifting Operations risk assessment gives a starting point for routine lifts, equipment can be logged on the ER4 Equipment Vehicles Register, and the TT-7-14 Lifting Operations toolbox talk briefs workers.
Document Control
The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
