Asbestos Safety Policy Template

An asbestos safety policy template committing to protect workers from exposure to asbestos in buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with rules for work that could disturb it and for the discovery of suspected asbestos.

The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.

What the Asbestos Safety Policy Covers

  • Where asbestos is found - the common uses, such as sprayed coatings, lagging, insulation board and asbestos cement
  • No asbestos removal - removal only by an appointed specialist contractor, licensed where the work requires it
  • Pre-start guidance - no work on an older building until the asbestos report or register for the area has been seen
  • Awareness training - for workers whose work could disturb asbestos, refreshed regularly
  • Known asbestos - materials clearly marked, locations given at induction, and a pre-start inspection before work begins
  • Stopping work - stopping and informing the line manager if the register is not available or suspect material is found
  • Unexpected discovery or exposure - clearing and zoning the area, informing management and the client, treating equipment as contaminated, informing anyone exposed, and recording the incident

Using the Policy

Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.

Who Needs an Asbestos Safety Policy?

Organisations whose workers carry out building, maintenance, installation or refurbishment work in buildings built or refurbished before 2000, including contractors working on client sites where the asbestos report or register must be seen before work starts.

Works with the Asbestos Procedure

The PP-7-19 Asbestos Policy Procedure sets out the asbestos arrangements, and the RA-HS14 Asbestos risk assessment is an example assessment for work where asbestos may be present.

Document Control

The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
