Competency Register Template
The Competency Register is a Word template for recording the competence of each person against the activities or skills your organisation needs, as a skills matrix that shows at a glance where training is needed.
Two Versions Supplied
- F-IMS31 - each person rated C for competent or T for training against each activity
- F-IMS31-V2 - each person rated from 0, no competence, to 4, competent and can train others, with current and target ratings for each activity
What's Included in this Register
- Areas Covered - the department, site or team the register applies to
- Completed By and Date Reviewed - who completed the register and when
- Competence rating key - the rating scale used in the register
- Names and activities - people down the side and competences or activities across the top
Built for Clause 7.2 of the ISO Standards
- Shows the competence needed for each activity and who holds it
- Highlights where training or supervision is still needed
- Gives a target to work towards in the V2 version
- Gives a dated record of each review of competence
Who Needs a Competency Register?
Every ISO management system standard asks organisations to determine the competence needed and to keep evidence of it. A one-page matrix suits small and medium-sized businesses that want a simple record they can update after training or appraisals.
Using the Register
List the activities that affect quality, safety or the environment across the top and your people down the side, then rate each. Use the gaps to plan training, and update the register after training, inductions and annual reviews.
Which Rating Scale?
The C and T version is quick to complete and simply shows who is competent and who is still in training. V2 uses a five-point scale, from 0 for no competence through basic skills, competent with supervision and competent, to 4 for competent and can train others. Recording a current and a target rating for each activity lets you plan development as well as record it.
Document Control
The footer carries the register number and title, issue, information classification and page numbering. The register can be listed with your other controlled documents on the F-IMS20 Document Register.
