COSHH Assessment — Drywall Primer (Water-Based Acrylic Emulsion)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers water-based acrylic drywall primer — used to seal and prepare plasterboard and skim-coat surfaces before painting in construction and decoration.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification — trade name, chemical name (water-based acrylic emulsion primer), SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid — inhalation, ingestion, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route
  • Biocide sensitisation risk — preservative biocides in water-based paints (e.g. isothiazolinones) can cause allergic contact dermatitis; a known sensitiser for some workers
  • Workplace exposure limits — general dust limits for dried paint particles; exposure during normal application is low
  • CLP hazard classification — Irritant pictogram
  • PPE requirements — including gloves and eye protection; RPE for spray application in enclosed spaces
  • Emergency procedures — spillage response and disposal of wet paint waste

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace where drywall primer is applied, including:

  • Painting and decorating contractors
  • Drylining and fit-out contractors
  • Construction and housebuilding operations
  • Facilities maintenance and refurbishment teams
