COSHH Assessment — Bitumen (Petroleum Bitumen / Roofing Felt Bitumen)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers petroleum bitumen — a complex mixture of high molecular weight hydrocarbons used for roof felting, joint sealing and waterproofing. Applied hot at 130–200°C; bitumen fumes generated during hot application are classified as a probable human carcinogen (IARC Group 2A).

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification — trade name (Bitumen / Roofing Felt Bitumen), chemical name (petroleum bitumen; complex high molecular weight hydrocarbon mixture), SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid — inhalation of bitumen fumes causing respiratory irritation and carcinogen risk; severe thermal burns from hot material; skin irritation from cold bitumen; serious eye damage from hot splash; specific first aid for each route
  • Probable carcinogen — bitumen fume — prolonged occupational inhalation of bitumen fumes increases risk of lung and bladder cancer; LEV is required for all hot bitumen work; RPE where LEV is insufficient
  • Workplace exposure limits — bitumen fume TWA 0.5 mg/m³ over 8 hours, from current BOHS/HSE guidance; do not rely on older assessment values
  • CLP hazard classification — Irritant and Long-term health hazard pictograms
  • PPE requirements — including RPE for fume, heat-resistant gloves, eye protection, coveralls and safety boots
  • Emergency procedures — hot burns: cool with water, do not remove adhered bitumen; fire: high flash point but use CO2 or foam if involved

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace where bitumen is used, including:

  • Flat roofing and roof felting contractors
  • Waterproofing and tanking specialists
  • Building maintenance and facilities management teams
  • Civil engineering and infrastructure contractors
