Preventing Slips and Trips Policy Procedure Template

The Preventing Slips and Trips Policy Procedure is a Word template that sets out how a business controls the risk of slips and trips in the workplace. It covers the company obligations on risk assessment, training, housekeeping and floors, practical measures for flooring, cleaning and slip-resistant footwear, and what employees must do about spillages, damaged floors and trip hazards.

Title, File Location, Issue No, Issue Date, Controlled By and Approved By fields and an Amendment Record support document control, with a Business Use information classification in the footer. It applies to all personnel involved in activities within its scope.

What the Policy Covers

  • Amendment record, summary, scope and applicability - the purpose of the policy, its scope across all company activities and locations, who it applies to and how guidance sections are marked
  • Overview and company obligations - the duty under health and safety law to control slip and trip risks, and the company commitments to risk assessment, training, housekeeping and suitable floors
  • Flooring measures - entrance matting, fixing leaks, spill kits, clear walkways, lighting, securing mats and rugs, closing drawers and covering cables across walkways
  • Cleaning and spillages - leaving floors smooth and dry or keeping pedestrians off, cleaning spills at once, cleaning schedules and using cleaning materials as instructed
  • Slip-resistant footwear - when slip-resistant footwear is issued to employees and visitors, and its treatment as personal protective equipment
  • Employee obligations - reporting spillages and damaged floors or mats, keeping work areas tidy, removing trip hazards and looking after any PPE issued

Built for Safer Floors and Walkways

  • Spill kits provided in areas with a high risk of spillage
  • Pedestrians kept off floors until they are dry after cleaning
  • Cables crossing walkways always covered and loose mats, rugs and carpets secured
  • Slip-resistant footwear issued only where floors cannot be kept dry, for employees and visitors alike
  • Leaks from machinery or buildings fixed immediately and loose or worn flooring reported

Who Needs a Preventing Slips and Trips Policy Procedure?

Any business with floors, walkways or work areas where spills, poor housekeeping or trailing cables could cause someone to slip or trip. It is written for those who manage premises and cleaning and for every employee.

Using the Policy

Edit the flooring, cleaning and footwear measures to match your premises and work processes, and set out who employees report damaged floors and faulty PPE to. Name the person in the Controlled By field, give it top level approval and brief employees on their obligations.

Cleaning Without Creating Hazards

The cleaning section has floors left smooth and dry after cleaning, or pedestrians kept off until they are dry. Spillages are cleaned up as soon as they are found, with the area isolated until then, cleaning and maintenance schedules support good housekeeping, and cleaning materials are used as the manufacturer instructs.

A day of remote support can take the risk assessments you already have, move them into one consistent format with the same scoring throughout, and build your hazard register from them, so the hazards this policy covers are backed by a current assessment.
