ISO 42001:2023 is the international standard for artificial intelligence management systems, and it is the standard organisations are being asked about as AI tools spread through their operations. The new ISO 42001 Toolkit is now available on alphaZ documents, supplying all 43 documents needed to set one up and run it.
What the ISO 42001 Toolkit Includes
The toolkit follows the same integrated approach as the other alphaZ toolkits. A single Integrated Management System manual and a supplied folder structure mean the AI management system sits alongside quality, environmental, health and safety or information security, with one set of procedures, one document control method and one management review.
At the centre is PP-1-42, the policy procedure the rest of the set is built around, covering the AI policy, roles and responsibilities, the AI system life cycle, risk and impact assessment, human oversight, supplier and model provider control, monitoring and communication. Around it sit the four AI forms, the AI risks and controls register, and the Statement of Applicability covering all 38 Annex A controls.
ISO 42001 Impact Assessment and Risk Register
Clause 6.1.4 requires an AI system impact assessment, and it is a separate requirement from the AI risk assessment. Risk assessment asks what could go wrong for the organisation. Impact assessment asks what the system could do to the people it touches - customers, employees, applicants and service users.
The toolkit handles both. The impact assessment form opens with a screening section so a low-risk tool takes minutes to dismiss with a reason on record, and only the systems that genuinely affect people get the full four-stage assessment. The resulting risks, their scoring and the controls applied are recorded on the AI risks and controls register, which carries the Annex A controls on their own sheet so the Statement of Applicability is driven by the risks rather than written afterwards.
Preparing for ISO 42001 Certification
Three audit checklists cover the clauses, the documentation requirements and all 38 Annex A controls, so the system can be checked before an external assessment. An implementation checklist works through the set-up in eleven sections, and a correlation document maps every clause of the standard to the file that satisfies it.
The individual documents are also available separately for organisations that need one or two rather than the full set.
