Business Health & Compliance Update

Update Details: A new Business Health and Compliance update has been issued on Using AI Safely. The full article has been emailed to subscribers with the Business Health and Compliance preference and is available as a PDF in the Update Service folder.

Why Using AI Safely Matters

AI tools have moved into everyday business use very quickly, often without anyone actually deciding they should. That brings real benefits, and a set of risks that many businesses have not yet stopped to assess: confidential or personal data going into public tools, outputs that are inaccurate or simply made up, biased results where decisions touch people, and unapproved tools that nobody has assessed. There is also the slow loss of in-house skills as people lean on AI to do the thinking.

What the Using AI Safely Update Covers

As with any new risk, the update starts with a risk assessment: understanding how AI is actually being used across the business, and what could go wrong, before deciding whether to embrace it, restrict it or ban it. It works through the main risk areas and a proportionate set of controls, from knowing which tools are in use and setting a clear position on what may never be entered into them, to protecting confidential and personal data, checking output before anyone relies on it, naming who is accountable, keeping staff skills sharp, and reviewing the position as tools change.

It also looks at making AI part of your wider management system rather than a one-off exercise, including where ISO 42001, the international standard for AI management, fits alongside standards such as ISO 27001, and why significant AI risks belong on your company or information security risk register so they are tracked alongside your other business risks.
