ISO 9001:2026 Internal Audit Checklist Template

A full clause internal audit checklist for ISO 9001:2026, working through every clause of the standard from 4.1 to 10.2 with space to record the evidence viewed, responses and findings against each requirement. It is set out on the F-Q2A Audit Checklist format, with the scope, criteria, site, participants, auditor and date recorded at the top.

A second checklist covers the documentation the standard requires, listing the mandatory documents and records with the clause each one comes from, so a documentation review can be completed on its own or alongside the full clause audit.

Note: ISO clause checklists only include the clause numbers and short prompts for each clause (due to copyright reasons) and therefore a full version of the ISO standard is required to be used in conjunction with these checklists.

What the Checklists Cover

  • Context and leadership - internal and external issues, interested parties, scope, the quality management system and its processes, leadership, customer focus, quality policy and roles
  • Planning - risks and opportunities, quality objectives and planning of changes
  • Support - resources, measuring equipment, organisational knowledge, competence, awareness, communication and documented information
  • Operation - operational planning, requirements for products and services, design and development, external providers, production and service provision, release and nonconforming outputs
  • Performance evaluation and improvement - monitoring and measurement, customer satisfaction, analysis and evaluation, internal audit, management review, continual improvement, and nonconformity and corrective action
  • Documentation - the mandatory documents and records, with records that only apply where a clause is relevant marked as such

Built for ISO 9001:2026

The checklist follows the clause numbering and requirements of ISO 9001:2026, including:

  • Whether climate change is a relevant issue (clause 4.1)
  • Quality culture and ethical behaviour (clauses 5.1.1 and 7.3)
  • Risks and opportunities determined and addressed separately (clauses 6.1.1 to 6.1.3)
  • Planning of changes (clause 6.3), and the separate evaluation of actions on risks and on opportunities (clauses 9.1.3 and 9.3.2)
  • Continual improvement at 10.1 and nonconformity and corrective action at 10.2

Using the Checklists

Record the scope and criteria at the top, then work through each clause, noting the evidence viewed and any findings as you go. The completed checklist becomes the record of the audit, and findings are followed up through corrective action. Audits can be spread across the year using the ER11 Audit Schedule, with the full clause checklist covering the whole standard over the audit programme.

A completed example of the ISO 9001:2026 checklist, with worked evidence against the alphaZ IMS1 manual, procedures, forms and registers, is available with an alphaZ Subscription.

Included in the ISO Toolkits

These checklists are part of the ISO 9001 Toolkit and are also included in the ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001 and ISO 22301 toolkits, including the integrated toolkits that combine them.
