Noise at Work Policy Procedure Template
The Noise at Work Policy Procedure is a Word template that sets out how a business protects people from excessive noise at work. It covers noise assessment and control, the action and limit values the company works to, personal hearing protection and how it is selected, hearing protection zones, training, what a noise risk assessment contains and health surveillance for noise-induced hearing loss.
Title, File Location, Issue No, Issue Date, Controlled By and Approved By fields and an Amendment Record support document control, and the footer carries a Business Use information classification. Sections marked Guidance are advisory, while the rest must be followed.
What the Policy Covers
- Amendment record, summary, scope and applicability - the purpose of the policy, its scope across all company activities and locations, who it applies to and how guidance sections are marked
- Overview and company duty - the company duty under health and safety law to assess noise and reduce the risk to health through reasonably practicable controls
- Control of noise - noise assessments at planned intervals or after significant change, reducing noise at source, ongoing checks, and the lower and upper action values and limit value
- Personal hearing protection - hearing protection as a last resort, supplying suitable protection with training, hearing protection zones and protection on request between the action values
- Selecting hearing protection - what is considered when choosing protectors, from attenuation, noise frequency and compatibility with other equipment to comfort and any medical disorders of the wearer
- Training for exposed employees - what employees exposed above the lower action value are told about their exposure, the controls in place, hearing protection and health surveillance
- Risk assessment, zones and health surveillance - what a noise risk assessment must contain, designating hearing protection zones at the upper action value, and health surveillance for those at risk
Built for Controlling Noise Exposure
- Lower and upper action values and the limit value set out, with the signage, protection or restrictions required at each
- Hearing protection used only as a last resort, never as an alternative to controlling noise
- Hearing protection zones marked with recognised warning signs where exposure reaches the upper action value
- Noise risk assessments carried out by a competent person, with a plan of sampling points and measured levels
- Health surveillance for noise-induced hearing loss wherever an assessment shows a risk to hearing
Who Needs a Noise at Work Policy Procedure?
Any business where equipment or processes create noise that could put employees' hearing at risk. It is written for those who assess and control noise and for the employees who work in noisy areas.
How the Policy Fits Together
The procedure references the P-78 Noise at Work Policy as the company policy, and ongoing checks that premises are safe and equipment is operating correctly are recorded on the F-HS8 Site Safety Inspection.
Using the Policy
Edit the noise control examples, hearing protection arrangements and training content to match the noise sources in your business, and decide who carries out noise assessments and arranges health surveillance. Name the person in the Controlled By field, give it top level approval and brief employees who work in noisy areas.
