Manual Handling Policy Procedure Template
The Manual Handling Policy Procedure is a Word template that sets out how a business assesses and reduces the risk of injury from manual handling. It covers evaluating the risk case by case, avoiding handling and using mechanical aids where reasonably practicable, step by step guidance on basic lifting, competence, marking heavy loads, safe systems of work and full lifting assessments.
Title, File Location, Issue No, Issue Date, Controlled By and Approved By fields and an Amendment Record support document control, with a Business Use information classification in the footer. Sections marked Guidance are advisory, and the rest of the procedure must be followed.
What the Policy Covers
- Amendment record, summary, scope and applicability - the purpose of the policy, its scope across all company activities and locations, who it applies to and how guidance sections are marked
- Overview and evaluating the risk of injury - risk assessment of all manual handling, case by case review of factors such as fatigue, posture and awkward loads, and use of mechanical aids
- Guidance on basic lifting - planning the lift, foot position, posture, grip, keeping the load close, avoiding jerking and twisting, and adjusting the load after putting it down
- Competence and heavy loads - only trained, competent workers carrying out manual handling, and marking heavy cases or boxes with their weight and lifting requirements
- Safe systems of work - what the company takes into account for planned lifting, lifting guidance in work instructions, and measures to cut twisting, stooping and carrying distance
- Lifting assessment - when to complete a full lifting assessment and the questions it asks about the task, the load, the environment, the worker, PPE and training
Built for Safer Lifting and Carrying
- Heavy cases and boxes marked to show their weight and whether more than one person or lifting equipment is needed
- Only trained and competent workers allowed to carry out lifting or manual handling
- Unpopular, difficult or laborious tasks reported to the safety representative for review
- Lifting guidance included in any work instructions or method statements for the activity
- Assessment prompts on pregnant workers, young workers and anyone with a health problem or physical difficulty
Who Needs a Manual Handling Policy Procedure?
Any business where people lift, lower, push, pull or carry loads as part of their work. It is written for the managers who plan and assess handling tasks and for the workers who carry them out.
How the Policy Fits Together
Where a full lifting assessment is needed it is completed on the F-HS31 Manual Handling Assessment, and the procedure lists what the assessment should consider.
Using the Policy
Edit the heavy load markings, lifting guidance and assessment prompts to suit the loads and tasks in your business, and name the safety representative who reviews tasks reported as difficult. Name the person in the Controlled By field, give it top level approval and brief workers before they carry out manual handling.
