ISO 45001 Clause 9 is where the management system gets checked. It covers the organisation's monitoring and measurement, evaluation of compliance with legal duties, internal audits, and management review.
{readmore}The clause is split into 9.1 Monitoring, measurement, analysis and performance evaluation (with 9.1.2 specifically on evaluation of legal compliance), 9.2 Internal audit, and 9.3 Management review. Together these form the "check" and "act" cycle of the management system - they tell you whether what you put in place under Clauses 4 to 8 is actually working. UK organisations also have specific monitoring and audit obligations under HSG65 and various sets of regulations, and Clause 9 provides the framework that brings these together.

- Clause 9.1 - Monitoring, Measurement, Analysis and Performance Evaluation - what to monitor and measure, how, when, criteria for evaluating OH&S performance, and the requirement to evaluate compliance with legal and other requirements.
- Clause 9.2 - Internal Audit - planned, programmed internal audits to check the management system conforms to the standard and the organisation's own requirements, and is effectively implemented.
- Clause 9.3 - Management Review - top management's periodic review of the management system using the inputs and outputs the standard prescribes, to confirm continuing suitability, adequacy and effectiveness.
