ISO 14001 Clause 9 - Performance Evaluation

Clause 9 of ISO 14001:2026 is where the organisation checks how well the environmental management system is working. It has three sub-clauses covering monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation; internal audit; and management review. Together they form the Check stage of the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, providing the evidence that drives continual improvement at Clause 10.

The 2026 edition introduces a meaningful change at Clause 9.2.2, requiring audit objectives to be defined for each individual audit, not just for the audit programme as a whole.

ISO 14001 Clause 9.1 - Monitoring, Measurement, Analysis and Evaluation

The organisation determines what needs to be monitored and measured, the methods to be used, when measurements are taken, when results are analysed, and how environmental performance is evaluated. This includes evaluating compliance with applicable compliance obligations.

ISO 14001 Clause 9.2 - Internal Audit

The organisation conducts internal audits at planned intervals to provide information on whether the environmental management system conforms to its own requirements and the requirements of ISO 14001:2026, and is effectively implemented and maintained. New in ISO 14001:2026 - audit objectives must now be defined for each individual audit, not just for the audit programme as a whole.

ISO 14001 Clause 9.3 - Management Review

Top management reviews the environmental management system at planned intervals to confirm its continuing suitability, adequacy and effectiveness. The review covers a defined set of inputs and produces decisions about continual improvement, changes needed, and resources required.
