ISO 14001 Clause 5 - Leadership

Clause 5 of ISO 14001:2026 sets out what is expected of top management in establishing and maintaining the environmental management system. The standard does not treat environmental management as a delegated technical exercise - it expects visible, accountable leadership from the people who direct and control the organisation. Clause 5 has three sub-clauses covering leadership and commitment, the environmental policy, and the assignment of roles, responsibilities and authorities.

ISO 14001 Clause 5.1 - Leadership and Commitment

Top management demonstrates leadership and commitment by taking accountability for the effectiveness of the environmental management system, ensuring the policy and objectives are established and aligned with the strategic direction of the organisation, ensuring the EMS is integrated with business processes, and providing the resources needed.

ISO 14001 Clause 5.2 - Environmental Policy

Top management establishes, implements and maintains an environmental policy that is appropriate to the organisation, provides a framework for setting environmental objectives, and includes commitments to protect the environment, meet compliance obligations, and continually improve.

ISO 14001 Clause 5.3 - Organisational Roles, Responsibilities and Authorities

Top management ensures that the responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles are assigned and communicated within the organisation, including responsibility for ensuring conformity with the standard and reporting on environmental performance to top management.
