ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, the first full revision of the quality management standard since 2015. It replaces ISO 9001:2015 and absorbs the 2024 climate change amendment. The clause structure is unchanged and there are no new mandatory documents or records.
ISO 9001:2026 - How Big Are the Changes?
Modest. Most organisations running an effective ISO 9001:2015 system already meet much of the intent of the 2026 edition. Three requirements have genuinely moved: quality culture and ethical behaviour, the separate treatment of risks and opportunities, and the planning of changes. The rest is tightening and clarification.
ISO 9001:2026 Key Changes Explained
- Quality culture and ethical behaviour (Clause 5.1.1), top management must now promote both, along with opportunity-based thinking alongside risk-based thinking and the process approach. Clause 7.3 adds them to what people working under your control have to be aware of
- Risks and opportunities split (Clause 6.1), now 6.1.1 determining risks and opportunities, 6.1.2 actions to address risks, and 6.1.3 actions to address opportunities. Each has to be determined, analysed and evaluated, and the effectiveness of the two sets of actions is evaluated separately in clause 9.1.3 and at management review
- Planning of changes (Clause 6.3), extended to cover the availability of information, how a change will be communicated, how its effectiveness will be monitored and evaluated, and how the results will be reviewed
- Climate change (Clauses 4.1 and 4.2), the 2024 amendment is now part of the standard rather than bolted onto it, and 4.2 adds determining which interested party requirements will be addressed through the management system

What ISO 9001:2026 Means for Your Documentation
This is where the cost of a revision actually lands. A management system written clause by clause has to be reworked every time the lettering moves, and this revision moves the lettering in clause 6 and clause 10. A system written around how the business actually runs needs a handful of targeted changes instead.
For most organisations the work sits in five places: the context and interested parties review, the risk register, the management of change process, the management review agenda, and staff awareness. Work through those and you have covered the substance of the revision. You will have a few years to transition, as with any revision of this kind, and your certification body will confirm the arrangements that apply to you. There is no advantage in waiting. The gap is small enough to close at your next management review, and doing it then costs you a single agenda item rather than a project.
