ISO 14001:2026 has now been published. The changes are moderate rather than fundamental, but every organisation certified to ISO 14001 will need to work through them before transition. Here's an overview of what's changed in ISO 14001:2026, and what we've updated across alphaZ documents in response.
ISO 14001:2026 Key Changes
- Clause 4.1 broader environmental context, biodiversity, ecosystem health, pollution levels and natural resource availability are now explicit considerations, joining climate change which was added by the 2024 amendment
- Clause 6.1.2 lifecycle perspective, strengthened guidance on applying lifecycle thinking to environmental aspects, covering normal and abnormal operating conditions and potential emergency situations
- Clause 6.3 management of change, the only genuinely new clause, requiring organisations to determine, plan and manage changes that affect EMS outcomes
- Clause 8.1 operational control, scope extended from outsourced processes to externally provided processes, products and services - the supply chain sits inside your EMS
- Clause 9.2.2 internal audit objectives, every internal audit must now have defined objectives, not just a defined scope and criteria
The overall direction brings ISO 14001:2026 into closer alignment with ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 27001, which makes integrated management systems easier to run consistently.
ISO 14001:2026 Compliance - What We've Updated
Because the alphaZ IMS system is not clause-based, very little actually needed updated and maybe just updating any references to the standard version is the only essential change. However, as we found out with the 2024 climate change update, updates are usually required more to meet auditor expectation rather than actual ISO requirements! As the standard is new there will be some expectation of updates to demonstrate compliance with the focus likely to be on the context update and lifecycle.
The alphaz IMS1 manual is organised around how a business operates with a focus on things that are relevant, not on the ISO clauses, so we already included lifecycle analysis but we've revisited and updated this and strengthened the procedures pointing at this to make it more central. Across every toolkit that includes ISO 14001, the following changes have been made:
- IMS1 manual, various sections updated including 1.3 Context, 4.2 Control of Purchasing, 4.4 Management of Change, 5.3 Management System Audits and 6.2 Environmental Assessment updated, with a new sub-section 6.2.6 Environmental Performance Monitoring
- P-2 Environmental Policy, strengthened opening wording and a new commitment covering climate change, biodiversity, pollution and resource availability
- PP-6-100 Environmental Management procedure, aligned to the updated IMS1 references
- F-IMS60 Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register, Aspect column expanded to cover Normal, Abnormal Conditions and Emergency Situations, Significance prompt updated to the 2026 environmental themes, Current Controls column reworked as Controlled / Influenced
- F-ENV6 Environmental Life Cycle Perspective Review, rebuilt as per-aspect cards covering upstream, own operations and downstream
- F-IMS62 Carbon Management Plan, new optional document
- ER34 Environmental Performance Register, new optional Excel register
- A-C ISO 14001:2026 Full audit checklist, rewritten to cover all clauses of the 2026 standard with new prompts for the five updated clauses
- ISO 14001:2026 Correlation, new correlation document; the 2015 correlation remains included for organisations still on the 2015 edition
- ER11 Audit Schedule, Awareness Certificate Template, Awareness Training PowerPoint and Mandatory Documents Checklist, all updated to cite the new standard
ISO 14001:2026 Transition
To support the transition to this standard we've prepared a full transition guidance document which can be downloaded from any ISO 14001 toolkit page. Further information about the updates to the toolkit and the new and updated documents is also available on the alphaZ document updates blog.
