Lifting Operations Training Talk

A training talk on lifting operations for anyone who plans, supervises or carries out lifts - planning, choosing suitable equipment, safe working loads, examinations and training. The download gives you a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, plus the full guidance document to run the talk from.

Two Files in One Download

  • TT-7-14 Lifting Operations - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
  • GG-7-14 Lifting Operations - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards

Talk Description

  • Planning lifting operations, with competent people and supervision
  • Selecting lifting equipment of adequate strength and stability
  • Safe working loads, and the markings on equipment and accessories
  • Lifting people only with equipment designed and marked for it
  • Thorough examinations, inspection records and maintenance
  • Training before using any lifting equipment

Running the Talk

Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.

Why Every Lift Starts With a Plan

A lift that has not been thought through can leave the wrong equipment, an unknown load weight or nobody clearly in charge. The talk opens with planning, competent people and supervision so the team understands that the lift is decided before the load leaves the ground.

Adapting the Talk

Both files are fully editable, so add the lifting equipment and accessories on your site, where the examination records are kept and who is authorised to plan and supervise lifts. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.

Keeping the Training Record

File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.

Who Is It For?

Crane and hoist operators, slingers, signallers, supervisors and anyone who uses lifting equipment or accessories. Use it at induction, before new lifting equipment comes into use and as a regular refresher.

Included in the ISO 45001 Toolkit

This training talk is part of the ISO 45001 Toolkit, and is included in the integrated toolkits that include it.

A day of remote support can take the risk assessments you already have, move them into one consistent format with the same scoring throughout, and build your hazard register from them, so the hazards your talks cover are backed by a current assessment.
