Completing a Risk Assessment Training Talk
A training talk on completing a risk assessment for supervisors, managers and anyone who helps assess the work - identifying hazards, deciding who might be harmed, rating the risk and recording the findings. The download gives you a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, plus the full guidance document to run the talk from.
Two Files in One Download
- TT-7-03 Completing a Risk Assessment - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
- GG-7-03 Completing a Risk Assessment - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards
Talk Description
- What hazard and risk mean
- Identifying the hazards, including non-routine work and long-term health hazards
- Deciding who might be harmed and how
- Evaluating the risk with the risk rating, and the order in which control measures are considered
- Recording the findings
- Reviewing the risk assessment when something changes
Running the Talk
Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.
Why Reviews Are Part of the Process
A risk assessment written once and filed away soon stops matching how the work is done. The talk finishes on reviewing the assessment when something changes, so that staff see it as a working document rather than a one-off task.
Adapting the Talk
Both files are fully editable, so add your own risk rating matrix, the risk assessment form you use and a task from your own workplace to work through as an example. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.
Keeping the Training Record
File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.
Who Is It For?
Supervisors, managers, team leaders and safety representatives who carry out or contribute to risk assessments. It works when people first take on that role and as a refresher before assessments are reviewed.

A day of remote support can take the risk assessments you already have, move them into one consistent format with the same scoring throughout, and build your hazard register from them, so the hazards your talks cover are backed by a current assessment.
