Working at Height Policy Template

A working at height policy template applying to all work activities that include an element of working at height, with a duty to properly plan, assess and manage that work.

The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.

What the Working at Height Policy Covers

  • What work at height means - work where a person could fall a distance that could cause injury if there were no precautions
  • Planned approach - planning, assessing and managing any activity that includes work at height
  • Avoid - avoiding work at height where reasonably practicable
  • Prevent falls - an existing safe place of work or the correct equipment, with collective protection such as guard rails before personal protection such as harnesses
  • Minimise - reducing the distance and consequences of a fall where the risk cannot be eliminated
  • Equipment - suitable for the task, checked before use and inspected at suitable intervals by a competent person, including ladders
  • Emergencies - plans for work at height including emergency and rescue arrangements
  • Competence - training for anyone who works at height, and no work at height without it

Written to Be Shared

Like every alphaZ policy, this is written as a public policy statement that can be shared openly with workers, customers, suppliers and assessors. The internal detail of how it is carried out belongs in your procedures.

Using the Policy

Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.

Who Needs a Working at Height Policy?

Any organisation whose work includes ladders, steps, platforms, scaffolds, roofs or any other work at height.

Works with the Working at Height Procedure

The PP-7-07 Working Safely at Height Policy Procedure sets out the procedure, the RA-HS01 Working at Height risk assessment gives a starting point, ladders can be recorded on the F-Q82 Ladder Register and checked with the F-Q83 Ladder Inspection Form, and the TT-7-07 Working Safely at Height toolbox talk briefs workers.

Document Control

The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
