Sustainability Policy Template

A sustainability policy template committing to operate sustainably, to consider sustainability in every part of the organisation's operations, and to use its position in the supply chain to influence suppliers.

The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.

What the Sustainability Policy Covers

  • Commitment - operating sustainably and meeting legal and regulatory requirements, with external providers expected to support the policy
  • Sustainable development - a wide definition, meeting present needs without compromising future generations
  • Awareness and management systems - promoting awareness and monitoring and improving environmental performance
  • Procurement - influencing suppliers and considering environmental and sustainability issues in purchasing
  • Strategy - sourcing locally and sustainably, eliminating hazardous materials, reducing waste and packaging, re-use and recycling, and sustainable goods, services and works
  • Objectives - environmental objectives, including a life cycle perspective
  • Improvement areas - recycling and waste, reduced business driving, fuel efficiency, energy use and carbon emissions

Written to Be Shared

Like every alphaZ policy, this is written as a public policy statement that can be shared openly with workers, customers, suppliers and assessors. The internal detail of how it is carried out belongs in your procedures.

Using the Policy

Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.

Who Needs a Sustainability Policy?

Organisations asked for a sustainability policy by customers or in tenders, and organisations working to ISO 14001 that want a wider statement alongside the environmental policy.

Works with the Carbon Management Plan

The F-IMS62 Carbon Management Plan and the ER34 Environmental Performance Register record carbon and environmental performance, and the PP-6-100 Environmental Management Policy Procedure sets out the environmental arrangements.

Document Control

The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
