Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register Template
A practical environmental aspects and impacts register template in Microsoft Word format, designed to help organisations identify the environmental aspects of their activities, assess significance, and document the controls in place to manage them.
Identifying and managing significant environmental aspects is a core requirement of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, and a foundational input to setting environmental objectives, planning operational controls, and demonstrating compliance.
Updated for ISO 14001:2026
This register has been updated to align with ISO 14001:2026, published on 15 April 2026. Three specific changes reflect the new standard's strengthened requirements:
- The Determination of Significance prompt now references the four 2026 themes: climate change, biodiversity, pollution and resource depletion. This reflects clause 4.1's requirement to consider environmental conditions including pollution levels, availability of natural resources, climate change, and biodiversity and ecosystem health.
- The Aspect column header has been expanded to Aspect (Normal, Abnormal Conditions and Emergency Situations). This reflects clause 6.1.2's strengthened requirement to consider aspects under all three condition types, not just normal operations.
- The Current Controls column is now Controlled / Influenced?, with sub-headers in each cell distinguishing what the organisation controls from what it influences. This aligns with the standard's expectation that organisations consider the extent of their control and influence across the lifecycle of their activities, products and services.
What's Included in this Environmental Aspects Register
The register is supplied as a landscape A4 Word document, structured as a single-page table with columns for Aspect, Description of Aspect, three check columns (Emergency, Impact, Legislation), Significant?, and Controlled / Influenced? The blank template provides 9 empty data rows ready for the assessor to complete.
The register is referenced from IMS1 Manual Section 6.2 Environmental Assessment and supports compliance with ISO 14001 clause 6.1.2 Environmental Aspects.
Who Needs an Environmental Aspects Register?
This register is suitable for any organisation operating or implementing an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, from small businesses completing their first environmental review to larger organisations refreshing their existing register to reflect the 2026 standard's strengthened lifecycle, control-and-influence, and four-themes requirements.
Included in Every ISO 14001 Toolkit
This register is included in every alphaZ documents toolkit that covers ISO 14001, from the standalone ISO 14001 Toolkit through to the fully integrated multi-standard toolkits. If you need a wider set of documents for an environmental or integrated management system, the toolkit route gives you this register plus everything else needed for compliant management system documentation, in a single download.
Sample Data Version Available with Subscription
A full sample data version of this register is included with an alphaZ subscription, featuring 14 worked-example aspects covering Energy Consumption, Waste Management, Noise, Transport, Water, Materials, Biodiversity, Chemicals, Chemical Transport, Business Travel, Computing/AI, Climate Change/GHG, Fire/Smoke and Spillage/Leak. Each example demonstrates the Controlled/Influenced convention in practice and serves as a practical reference for completing your own register.
Pairs with the Life Cycle Perspective Review
For any aspect determined to be significant, ISO 14001:2026 strengthens the expectation that organisations consider environmental impacts from a lifecycle perspective: upstream raw materials and supplier operations, the organisation's own operations, and downstream customer use and end-of-life disposal. The companion F-ENV6 Environmental Life Cycle Perspective Review provides a structured per-aspect format for evidencing this consideration.
