Storing Oils and Chemicals Training Talk

A training talk on storing oils and chemicals for workshop, yard and maintenance staff - bunded storage, refuelling, spill kits and the hazardous substance side of keeping chemicals safe. The download gives you a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, plus the full guidance document to run the talk from.

Two Files in One Download

  • TT-6-03 Storing Oils and Chemicals - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
  • GG-6-03 Storing Oils and Chemicals - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards

Talk Description

  • Storing oils and chemicals in secure, bunded areas away from drains and traffic routes
  • Refuelling, drip trays, and keeping valves and pipes within the bund
  • Knowing where spill kits are, and never pouring liquids down drains or watercourses
  • What counts as a hazardous substance
  • Hazardous substance risk assessments, safety data sheets and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Hazard pictograms and emergency procedures

Running the Talk

Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.

Why Valves and Pipes Stay Inside the Bund

A bund only works if everything that can leak sits within it, including taps, valves and delivery pipes. The talk covers this alongside refuelling and drip trays because leaks so often happen at the point of use rather than from the tank itself.

Adapting the Talk

Both files are fully editable, so add where your bunded stores and spill kits are, the oils and chemicals you hold, your refuelling arrangements and who to call if a container leaks. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.

Keeping the Training Record

File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.

Who Is It For?

Staff who store, decant or use oils, fuels and chemicals, including drivers, maintenance and yard teams. It works at induction, after a new store or tank is installed and following a leak or near miss.
